Vihaan Janakiram is busy the whole day. He has just moved in to his new house after getting married 3 months ago. He has planned for a small housewarming party for his boss Neelakantan Raman who calls himself Neel Ram. His wife Meera is busy trying out new dresses for the occasion and his cook Prem Roy who is from Darjeeling has been bothering him since morning with lots of questions on the exact dishes to be prepared. He is also expecting his mother Janaki who is delayed because of a voice over recording that had to be redone due to change in lines. Vihaan is a sales manager in a diamond company that has its headquarters in South Africa and his boss has relocated to India for one year of deputation after living in South Africa for 25 years.
Neel arrives at Vihaan’s house and says his current live in partner Liza will be 30 mins late as she had to drop off someone at the airport and they discuss differences between living in South Africa and Bangalore. Neel explains how in South Africa he lives among animals but in Indian cities, animals live amongst humans. He believes that it is because cities have grown due to the population and says old fashioned marriage ideas and having children is the main cause of this. Neel chides Vihaan for settling down at such a young age. He says that he doesn’t feel anything is permanent in this life and every relationship has an expiry date. The only things that are permanent are stones and diamonds which he mines day in day out. People also don’t keep these diamonds permanently, they gift, sell and steal it. Vihaan says the two may not be comparable and gives example of his pet dog that passed away last year which always used to come back to its house somehow after running away. Neel feels that Vihaan is a sentimental fool and humans have been bestowed with intelligence to differentiate between permanent assets and human emotions due to difference in hormones or blood flow to the brain.
Meera offers something to drink and talks about how Vihaan and she met and the fact that Vihaan loved people at the orphanage she grew up with and wanted to be associated with them. Neel finds it strange that Meera can cope with a family atmosphere despite being an orphan and the fact that her parents abandoned her should make her realize that no family is permanent. She says that she does not know in what situation did her parents abandon her and she is not interested in knowing the truth. She says that while there are people who abandon, there are people like Vihaan who help people like her feel that they should be together under one roof to share everything in life. She says she loves Vihaan so much that being with him is all that matters to her. She says that in most cases, having the confidence that someone would be there for you till the end reduces the need for many medicines.
Prem comes with some snacks and Neel asks him why he still wants to be with a family if he only meets them once a year. He says that there was no need of him to be stuck in that marriage and force his wife to have kids. He could have been in open relationships wherever he was. Prem responds that his wife would come here and kill him if he talks about all these. He is shocked to know that Neel has a live-in partner and says he is even scared to mention it to his wife. Prem says that his wife wants him to come back one day and be together in their old age. He feels that even though he stays so far, speaking to his family over phone regularly makes him feel that he is connected and that they will never leave him. Neel responds by saying he is trying to extend the expiry date of his relationship by using the telephone like a refrigerator that is used to extend the life eatables so that they don’t expire.
Neel switches gears to sports and music and discovers that Vihaan’s mother used to sing during her younger days. Vihaan has no recollection of his father and his mother has never told him. Neel gets reminded of his younger days in Bangalore. During the discussion, Prem comes up with many excuses for things not being at home and Meera goes out to purchase them. Meera’s car gets punctured, and Vihaan says sorry to Neel and goes down to help Meera.
The doorbell rings and Vihaan’s mother Janaki comes home. Neel and Janaki are surprised to see each other given that neither of them would have guessed meeting after almost 25 years. They relive events that happened 25 years. Neel says he did not see any meaning in continuing their relationship when she was unwilling to relocate, and he really had to move on to his next goal. Neel finds resemblance between him and Vihaan wants to know why Vihaan’s surname is Janakiram assuming that it’s a combination of his and Janaki’s name, Janaki replies that it’s a combination of her and her father’s name. Lots of attempts by Neel to get Janaki to reveal the identity of Vihaan’s father fall flat as Janaki is adamant not to reveal the identity as she feels that Vihaan has made his own identity in this world and does not need a father’s identity. Janaki says that she would rather want Vihaan not to know his father than to know that his father abandoned him. Neel feels Janaki is not doing the right thing by hiding the truth. He says that legally she cannot take away the fact that he is the father of Vihaan and he will pursue this issue till the end. He feels Vihaan has a bright future and the wealth he has accumulated can be transferred to Vihaan to build on it. He wants to do a paternity test using DNA. Janaki says that it would fail as Neel used to earn money during his younger days at the IVF clinic.
Vihaan and Meera come back and see Neel upset and not his usual self and ask him what’s wrong. Janaki reveals the relationship between her and Neel. Neel insists that Vihaan is his son and asks Vihaan to force Janaki to reveal the truth. Vihaan is disturbed and asks Janaki to sort this out. Janaki asks him if knowing the identity of his father is important to him and gives the example of Meera who has accepted to live with a family inspite of not knowing where her real family is. Vihaan understands and says that he has grown up only with his mother and nothing else matters to him now. He tells Neel that just like Neel feels relationships have an expiry date, truth has an expiry date and if the truth is revealed after that it makes no sense to anyone. He tells Neel that if he needs help with cremation after his death, he can count on Vihaan but he has grown up to look up to Janaki as both his mother and father. Vihaan says he is not a diamond that Neel can buy or steal from Janaki
The doorbell rings and Liza enters the house. Neel is confused and angry and reveals that he feels cheated and blames everyone else for this situation and asks Liza if he can sue for a paternal test in South Africa. Liza tells him that her friend who left the airport just finished the process of adopting a child and that’s the reason she had to wish her on starting a family. Liza starts revealing the truth of why Neel wanted to come to India. Neel’s sister was a drug addict and her boyfriend abandoned her after she gave birth to a child. His sister died of a drug overdose. The child became Neel’s responsibility and he had to take care of it. He could not and he had to abandon the child at an orphanage. These incidents have not allowed him to trust anyone including himself with a family. He came to India because he got a lead on his niece through someone. Liza says that Neel has to learn to trust and accept people who want to be part of his journey. Relationships built on trust and acceptance have no expiry date, they remain in everyone’s memories forever.
Neel suddenly says he feels old and tired of running behind goals and aims he had set for himself all these years. He realizes that he has never accepted that a family and relationship is built over acceptance and trust. His lack of trust that others would stay with him has not allowed him to build a family and he feels that has led to him being alienated with so many people. He has been suffering for so many years due to this action of his to abandon his niece and other relationships. He reveals that he investigated the lead and found out that Meera is his niece. He had wanted to come and talk to her and Vihaan to make sure they are happy together. However, he did not expect events to unfold this way. He decides that the truth is not important as irrespective of Vihaan being his son or not, he will now be part of Neel’s extended family. They decide to go back to South Africa and start a family with adopted children which Neel was totally against before. Prem comes running from the kitchen and says he needs 2 weeks leave as his wife has delivered a third child. Neel comments that he better go back to South Africa before Prem and his wife have their fourth child.
